The Hamtramck Historical Commission was formed by city ordinance in 1998. The seven-member commission consists of two persons appointed by the mayor and five by the Common Council.

Currently, Greg Kowalski is chairman and Commissioners are Joan Bittner, Cindy Cervenak, Dennis Orlowski, Claudia Mallette and Hillary Cherry. Greg and Dennis are appointed by the mayor.

Greg is a journalist and editor of the Birmingham Eccentric. Joan owns the Polish Art Center with her husband, Ray. Dennis is a well-known mural artist whose works are featured on buildings throughout southeast Michigan. Cindy is very active with St. Florian Parish and the Girl Scouts. Claudia and Hillary are new members of the Commission and have a deep interest in preserving Hamtramck’s history.
