When did Pope John Paul II visit Hamtramck?

What day did Roy Rogers come to town?

The answers to these questions - and 363 more can be found in the new Hamtramck day-by-day calendar being produced by the Hamtramck Historical Commission in cooperation with The Citizen newspaper.

The 2009 calendar, which is on sale now, lists an historical event with each day of the year. Every day relates to an important event that took place on that day in the long and colorful history of Hamtramck. In addition, the 40-page calendar includes dozens of historical photo of the city, including the important persons and events that made Hamtramck what it is today.

From the formation of Hamtramck Township (Jan. 1, 1798) to the day Hamtramckan Leon Zarski won a Grammy award (Feb. 24, 1987) and beyond, the Hamtramck calendar is packed with fascinating footnotes of history.

It would make a perfect holiday gift for anyone with ties to Hamtramck or who has an interest in local history. The calendar sells for $10 and initially is available at the Polish Art Center, 9539 Jos. Campau. In the coming weeks it will be made available at stores throughout Hamtramck.

All proceeds from the sale will go to benefit the Hamtramck Historical Commission and its continuing efforts to preserve Hamtramck’s history.

For information, contact the Polish Art Center at (313) 874-2242.
